"I Don't Need Travel Medical Insurance"; An American Phenomenon

Anywhere else in the world, purchasing travel medical insurance is a no-brainier, and is second nature when traveling outside of the country. In 2017, a study conducted by travel site USJetcost.com, polled 4,784 Americans, all of whom said that they had traveled outside continental US within the last 12 months. Of those polled, 41% said that they had not taken out travel insurance for their trip. Not purchasing travel medical insurance is simply unsafe and irresponsible, and I will tell you why.

It Is Too Expensive

The most common reason why travel medical was not purchased was that it is too expensive. In fact, the opposite is true. Buying travel medical insurance is very inexpensive; as little as a dollar a day. The average health insurance policy cost is just $46. It is more expensive not buying travel medical insurance, because uncovered medical costs, especially abroad, can be outrageous. People who had to visit a doctor or hospital abroad with no travel insurance paid an average of $1,295.

Haven't Heard Of It

Lack of knowledge about the insurance and medical industry in the U.S. plays a huge role in rising medical costs for Americans. Those in the states don't know what their medical insurance does or does not cover, and what costs or risks are associated with not knowing. One key difference between your major medical plan (if you have one), and travel medical insurance is that travel medical insurance provides coverage for emergency medical evacuations. If you are in a remote area and you have a life or death medical situation or accident, being evacuate to the nearest hospitals can cost upwards of $250,000 depending on where you are and where you need to go.

My Trip Is So Short, It Is An Unnecessary Expense

Americans are known internationally for their optimism. That can be a good thing, such as when it leads you to travel to a country you have never been to before, but it can also lead to dangerous situations. As a result, many Americans decide to forgo travel insurance because they plan on being careful, so nothing will happen to them. While it’s true that many emergency situations can be prevented just by being mindful, others you just can’t predict.
